Our own chat room? (UPDATE)

Proposing this idea to you all, to see what you guys think.

I was thinking about having our own Alliance chat room, either on Vent or set one up IM-style on Skype.

For Vent, I can either ask Tira to set up a room for us, or I can open our own Vent server. From what I understand, it's fairly inexpensive should I open our own server. Opening one with Tira may be a lot cheaper, if not free, though I am more then happy to donate to help cover her Vent server costs.

As for Skype, the service is free, so long as the people you're talking to have a Skype account. You only have to pay if you're using the service as a regular phone. You can open up a room much like opening up a room on any IM program. However, this would mean that the person has to be invited into the room, rather then just logging on right into the room like you would on Vent.

Both programs have a text chat option, in an event that you don't have a mic at the moment or it ends up crapping out. To my knowledge, out of the two, Vent has TTS while Skype doesn't.

Discuss.

I'll cover a list of solutions.

1) Everyone has mics: Skype seems like a better choice, being free and all. While the concept of using it seems nice, I'm not sure how much we'll be using it. We can step up to Vent if we do use it a lot.

2) Not all of us have mics: It might just be easier to rely on a service like AIM or MSN, and talk through that. Both have chats, and most of us already have this.

I figured that it would make partying events, like leveling or MvPing, easier by communicating through voice chat, rather then text. So whenever someone's getting pummeled, instead of scrambling on the keyboard asking for help, they can panic on through the mic:

"OUENDAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN~!!!!"

But that's just me. XD

This becomes a question of:

It's not so much that he plays the song in its entirety on repeat.

He plays the same loop over and over and over again.

Either way I am in favor of the chatting via the intertubes, especially with this trying to use /bm. Typing is overrated when we could just jibber jabber at one another, and this way, less issues swapping between talking on /bm and fight-an. The -free- aspect of Skype also sounds pleasent.

My vote goes to Skype, simply because it seems to do all the "important" stuff Ventrilo does, but for free. Even if we do end up using it often, there's no real reason to pay for it. (Unless there's something amazing Ventrilo can do that I'm missing?)

And yeah, this might come in handy while MVPing and DMing and whatnot.

The one thing Ventrilo allows you to do is admin stuff (mute and kick people), and create sub-channels that branch out from the main lobby channel. It's not really necessary, I think, unless there's a reason why we would need extra channels other then the main lobby one.

For Skype, you can invite anyone into the same channel, similar to how it's done in AIM and MSN. It works just like an IM program, too, as far as its interface and customization (avatars, etc.) goes.

I think I'd actually prefer something more along the lines of mIRC, but I'm not so big on voice chats. Too much like using the phone, and I talk aaaall day. Perhaps there'd be something that incorporates both? That Skype business seems like a good idea.

Both Vent and Skype have a text chat option, if you choose not to use a mic. Though Vent has TTS (Text To Speech) and Skype does not AFAIK.

Text to speech can be annoying at times, so my vote's going to Skype.

Finally decided may as well vote for Skype. Its a lot less of a hassle than hooking up Vent with Tira (especially with how busy she is).
